Chronic Pain Q & A

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is long-standing pain that persists beyond the usual recovery period or for three months or longer. Chronic pain may be on-and-off or continuous, but it can have debilitating effects regardless of its pattern.

This type of pain often affects people to the point that they can’t work, eat properly, take part in physical activity, or enjoy life. It can affect a person’s psychological as well as physical health.

Chronic pain leads to depression in up to 85% of sufferers, and anxiety disorders are also strongly linked to chronic pain.

What are the treatment options for chronic pain?

The first approach typically includes conservative treatments like physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and oral medication.

Should the first treatments fail, doctors often recommend other pain management options like steroid injections or even spine surgery.

Unfortunately, these options are often inadequate for many types of chronic pain, especially neuropathic (nerve) pain such as:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spinal injuries
  • Cancer
  • Failed back surgery
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Phantom limb pain (pain after an amputation)
  • Post-herpetic neuralgia (lasting pain after shingles)

MGM Ketamine Center offers intravenous (IV) ketamine infusions, an evidence-based treatment with tremendous results for many people with chronic pain, particularly those who have exhausted traditional therapies and medications.

Ketamine was first used as an anesthetic, but today it’s an innovative alternative treatment for chronic pain as well as mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

The drug works on multiple chemical receptors in the brain and spine, including N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), which is particularly important in pain modulation. Ketamine can block NMDA receptors to prevent pain signaling.

How does ketamine treatment work?

Ketamine treatments happen in the spa-like MGM Ketamine Center office. You have a private room with a comfortable reclining chair and natural light for your intravenous infusion. The expert team monitors you closely throughout the 40-50 minute treatment and for a couple of hours afterward.

A nasal spray version of ketamine, Spravato®, is also available for in-office treatments that you administer yourself under expert supervision.

Many people experience an almost immediate reduction in pain after they start treatment. You typically have a series of ketamine treatments to reach the optimal effects. After your series of treatments, ketamine continues working in your body to prevent pain for as long as three months.
